What is a dosha?

In Ayurveda, the five elements, earth, water, fire, air and ether, combine in the body into three functional energies called doshas: vata (air + ether, the energy of movement), pitta (fire + water, the energy of transformation) and kapha (earth + water, the energy of structure). Everyone contains all three; what differs is the proportion. That unique proportion, set at conception, according to the classical texts, shapes your build, digestion, sleep, temperament, and the ways your body tends to go out of balance.

Knowing your dominant dosha is practical, not academic: it tells you which foods digest well for you, which daily routine keeps you steady, what your early warning signs of imbalance look like, and why advice that works for a friend can fail completely for you.

Prakriti vs vikriti, why this quiz asks two sets of questions

Most online dosha tests blur two very different things. Your prakriti is your baseline constitution, the proportion of vata, pitta and kapha you were born with. It does not change. Your vikriti is your current state, the doshas as they stand today after months of weather, food, work and stress. It changes constantly, and it is the thing Ayurveda actually treats.

That is why Part 1 asks about your whole life and Part 2 asks only about the last 30 days. When the two differ, say, a kapha person showing strong vata signs after months of travel and deadlines, the classical rule is simple: balance the aggravated dosha first, then return to your constitutional routine. A quiz that never separates the two cannot tell you which is which.

How this quiz works

The 20 questions follow the assessment categories used in classical constitutional analysis, frame, skin, hair, appetite, digestion, sleep, climate preference, pace, mind, memory and stress pattern, the same territory covered in Charaka Samhita’s teaching on prakriti (Vimanasthana, chapter 8). Your answers are scored as vata, pitta or kapha percentages, separately for each part.

If one dosha leads clearly, that is your dominant type. If your top two scores fall within fifteen points of each other you are a dual-doshic type (vata–pitta, pitta–kapha or vata–kapha), which is the most common result, not the exception. If all three land nearly equal, you are the rarer tridoshic type. Your results appear instantly on this page; nothing is emailed, gated or collected.

Understanding your result

A quick orientation to each outcome, your full result above goes deeper:

  • Vata, light frame, quick creative mind, variable digestion and sleep. Balanced by warmth, routine and grounding food.
  • Pitta, medium athletic frame, sharp focused mind, strong digestion that overheats. Balanced by cooling food, unmissed meals and real downtime.
  • Kapha, solid frame, calm steady mind, slow digestion and deep sleep. Balanced by vigorous morning movement, light spiced food and novelty.
  • Dual types, lead with the dosha that is currently aggravated, or with the season: vata rises in autumn, pitta in summer, kapha in late winter and spring.
  • Tridoshic, maintain with a steady daily routine and seasonal adjustments rather than dosha-specific restriction.

What to do next

Your dosha only matters if it changes your day. Start with the three steps in your result, then go deeper: read the complete guide to vata, pitta and kapha, set up your morning using brahma muhurta, rising before sunrise, and build the full Ayurvedic daily routine, dinacharya. Frequently asked questions

Can my dosha change over time?

Your prakriti, the constitution you were born with, stays the same for life. What changes is your vikriti, the current state of the doshas, which shifts with seasons, diet, age and stress. When people say their “dosha changed,” they are almost always describing a vikriti shift. That is also why retaking this quiz in a different season can produce a different Part 2 result while Part 1 stays stable.

What does a dual-dosha result mean?

It means two doshas shape you in nearly equal measure, true for most people. In practice you manage the pair by context: favour the routine for whichever of the two is currently aggravated, and follow the seasons, cool pitta in summer, ground vata in autumn, lighten kapha in spring.

Do I need to give my email address to see my results?

No. Your results appear instantly on this page, scores, interpretation and next steps. We think assessment tools should inform you before they ask anything of you.

How accurate is an online dosha quiz?

A self-assessment is a starting point, not a clinical verdict. It reflects how well you observe yourself, which is genuinely useful, but a trained practitioner will also read pulse, tongue and appearance before settling on your constitution. Treat your result as a working hypothesis to test against your own experience.

Is a dosha quiz the same as an Ayurvedic body type quiz?

Yes, “Ayurvedic body type” is simply the everyday English for prakriti, and vata, pitta and kapha are the three types (with their dual combinations). This quiz measures both your body type and your current imbalance, which is the part most body-type quizzes leave out.
